When it comes to causes of death in the United States, where do you think homicide ranks? Maybe tenth? Eighth? Higher?
If you base your answer on media coverage, you might think homicides come in first and are the leading cause of death.
That’s because media outlets cover homicide deaths far more than other deaths.
Consider this: For the New York Times, 42 percent of the coverage of 2023 causes of death focused on homicides. For the Washington Post, it was 46 percent. And for Fox News, 52 percent of the network’s coverage of causes of death highlighted homicides.
That’s far more than coverage of any other causes of death by these outlets.
So, are homicides truly the leading cause of death?
Far from it.
